Jabba the Hut

From the name, you might think that this is in a galaxy far, far away but no, it’s in the sand dunes at Cleethorpes! A range of ‘arty’ beach huts was to be built to provide both useful accommodation and to make an artistic statement.  The problems for us, and the foundation designers, were:

  • difficult access on to the sand dunes
  • a protected wildlife area (in fact our driller was bitten by a snake – we didn’t have a risk assessment for that!)
  • very loose and shifting sand

But eventually the job got done.

Maybe ‘the force’ was with us.

The Sharp Project, Manchester
sharp

This TV/media complex is part of Manchester's growth of media business and is a bold move outside the Salford Quay Media City. It has already housed the set for BBC's "Casualty 1909" and one big selling point is the one gigabyte transatlantic internet "pipe" described as the new ship canal.

Worms Eye was pleased to be involved in ensuring the project was literally "built on a firm foundation".

Pools Brook Caravan Site

The £2m redevelopment of a former coalmine and waste lagoon into an eco-friendly caravan site was a major challenge. Deep fill, ground instability, landfill gas and contamination were all issues to be overcome.

The site included the latest energy saving measures such as photovoltaic panels, solar heating panels and a wind turbine. Over 1 km of pipe for the geothermal heat recovery system was buried underground.

Another successful site developed for our long-standing client, the Caravan Club.

Bolton School Sixth Form Centre

A stunning new Sixth Form Centre is set to provide the best of both worlds for students at Bolton School. Work on the new £7m build in the heart of the campus, will begin in 2012 with the centre opening in time for the 2013 Autumn Term.

Architecturally, the glass and sandstone elliptical building promises to provide a stunning contrast to the School's Neo-Gothic facade and turrets. The new centre will link to the main building with two-storey glazed walkways and will provide independence for over 400 Sixth Form students.
